Current Missions Opportunities

Spring brings new hope and special prayers for the children as Missions shares April's Blue Ribbon Month - National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Stop by the Missions table in the Activity Center for a blue bracelet or pin to wear in honor of children everywhere. Tips on positive parenting, what to do when you witness child abuse in a public place (and how to defuse the situation) as well as fun, inexpensive ideas of sharing time with your children will be at the table. Missions is collecting diapers of all brands and sizes for the children at East Valley Child Crisis Center all through April - please drop them off at the Mission shelves.

One memorable way to share a Saturday evening with your family is to serve at UMOM's homeless shelter on the first Saturday of every month. Cooking begins at the Church's kitchen at 2 p.m. and servers arrive at 4:30 to take the food to downtown Phoenix. Sign up for a Saturday at our table or email Missions@gilbertumc.org.

If you can imagine 72 small faces light up when they saw their multi-colored easter baskets of toys, chocolate and eggs, you can imagine SideWalk Sunday school receiving your gifts of joy. Thanks go to the confirmation class who built these beautiful Easter treats for the children of SideWalk Sunday school in time for Easter.

If you missed the information about Nothing But Nets - how $10 provides a gift of life for malaria-ridden areas of our country, check out the information available at Nothingbutnets.com or stop by Missions..

The team for New Orleans leaves April 12th through the 19th to work with our partner churches in New Orleans. Missions has scholarships for those who can go to pay for the airfare, lodging and food costs - all we need is your energy and time! Contact Trish or Blaine Harris immediately if you can go on the April 12th trip! The work involved is general physical labor repairing the interior of churches and possibly pastor homes. Cajun Cookbooks will be sold at our table for the next several weeks as well at a bargain $15 price. Next trip will probably be late Sept / early October... .

UMOM is sponsoring a Fashion Show and Tea at Orange Tree Golf Resort called Birdsong featuring silent auction items, clothes from ColdWater Creek and a delicious tea. $30,00 per person if you'd like to attend.

Missions work throughout the year

As United Methodists, we believe that faith needs to express itself through action. Our church is regularly involved in a broad range of mission activities, as we have sought to express the good news and love of Jesus Christ around our community. Our many different campaigns include:

The Homeless Community

  • Several times a month, our church serves dinner to men, women, and children at both UMOM’s overflow shelters, the Justa Center and the Watkins facility.
  • In 2006, our church provided breakfasts and lunches for approximately 70 families at the Justa Center for four months.
  • Over 150 backpacks have been purchased and filled with personal toiletries donated by our congregation for families at the Justa Center .
  • Groups from our church visit the Justa Center several times a month to play with the homeless children.

Children in our community

  • Children who attend Sidewalk Sunday School receive Easter baskets, which are loaded with candy and toys to celebrate this most holy day.
  • Every fall, church members fill backpacks with new school supplies for low-income students at Gilbert Elementary.
  • Foster Angels of Arizona Serving Together (FAAST) provides names and Christmas wish lists for over 100 foster children, and our church generously grants those wishes.
  • Our congregation participates in Operation Christmas Child, and wrapped shoeboxes of joy and hope are shipped all over the world.

Women and families in crisis

  • More than 100 needy families in our community receive boxes filled with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving dinner.
  • Battered women receive purses and cosmetics from our congregation for Shoebox Ministry’s Mother’s Day program.
  • Carloads of diapers are donated for UMOM, as well as the East Valley Child Crisis Center .

Neighbors in need

  • Through the annual Rock-n-Roll Paint-a-Thon each October, 25 members of our church paint the home of a low-income family.
  • Our church members regularly participate in building homes for Habitat for Humanity.
  • Food drives are held all year long to benefit Gilbert Open Arms food bank.

The Missions Committee meets the third Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in Room 212. We welcome anyone who wishes to reach out to others in the community.
